Sometimes you don't need a light to get a warm, professional-looking headshot - you just need to know how to shape the light that's already there. This setup was shot outdoors using the sun itself at the key light, with a 40"x40" artificial silk to soften and blunt its harshness. A bounce card opposite the subject kicks light back into his face to fill in shadow. Because the setup is outdoors and exposed to potential gusts of wind, the 40" and 20" C-Stands holding the light modifiers are secured by 25lbs shot bags. Get a warm, professional headshot outdoors using nothing but sunlight, a silk, and a bounce card. How do you get soft, natural light outdoors without artificial lighting?

Position your subject outside in direct sunlight, then diffuse that direct sunlight through a silk. A 40"x40" artificial silk on a C-Stand cuts the harshness of direct sun into a soft, even light - no strobes or continuous light required. A 48"x48" size works well, as do Open End Frames 18"x24 and 24"x36" and RoadRags and RoadRags II kits, all of which has an artificial silk option.

Why do you need a bounce card if the sun is already providing light?

A diffused key light may leave one side of the face or body in shadow. A bounce card positioned opposite the key will reflect the sunlight back onto the subject, filling in shadows without needing to add a second light source. Experiment with positioning the bounce card for desired effect.

What's a good safety tip for setting up this shoot outdoors?

A large silk or any fabric on a frame, can catch wind like a sail. In this setup, both the tall leg and the middle leg of the stand should be bagged to ensure this does not occur. Outdoors, wind adds a variable that doesn't exist in-studio, so you must at all times, weight the stand appropriately for load and conditions. If unsure, more is more.

Why use a shot bag instead of a sandbag on a C-Stand?

A standard 25lb sandbag will hang perfectly on the tall leg of a C-Stand. However, in this use case, we want to double bag the stand to make sure it doesn't take off in a wind gust since we are outside. A 25lbs sandbag on the middle leg will hang too low and touch the ground, making it ineffective as a counterweight. A 25lb shot bag has a lower profile, and will hang on the middle leg without touching the ground, making it the clear choice for this application.

Can this setup work indoors too?

Yes! And, it's worth planning for. Outdoor natural light setups are at the mercy of the sun's position, which shifts throughout the day. If you're shooting headshots over several hours, consider replicating this same two-point setup indoors with a continuous light positioned behind the silk in place of the sun, and another bounce card to fill shadow. In that situation, you will also benefit from a Chimera softbox, which will diffuse directly from the light source, and won't require the silk setup. Chimera has many softboxes available that fit all standard lights, both continuous light and strobe.
