Matthellini & Mafer Clamps

Matthellini & Mafer Clamps

Matthellini and Mafer clamps are two of the most trusted names in grip hardware — and for very different jobs. Matthellini clamps grip almost any surface — tube, pipe, tables, chairs, bannisters, even a sheet of paper — making them an extremely versatile clamp on set, on location, or anywhere outside the film industry that needs a fast, secure hold. Mafer clamps are purpose-built for round tube and pipe, pairing a locking grip with a full accessory system for mounting lights, monitors, and camera gear. This collection covers every version Matthews makes: the original Matthellini, the Black Chrome Matthellini, the redesigned Matthellini² in black hyper-chrome, the lighter-weight Mini Matthellinis, and the complete Super Mafer family with pins, arms, and mounts.

Matthellini vs. Mafer: Which Clamp Do You Need?

Matthellini and Mafer clamps solve different problems, and picking the right one comes down to what you're gripping and what you're mounting. Matthellini clamps use Matthews' signature handle-driven jaw to clamp onto nearly any surface — round, flat, thick, or thin — which is why they're standard on grip carts for tables, set pieces, and railings as well as pipe and tube. They come in three builds: the original Matthellini (chrome, steel shaft, rubber grip pad), the Black Chrome Matthellini (same design in black chrome), and the Matthellini² (black hyper-chrome, with a redesigned curved jaw that cuts surface binding by roughly 67% versus previous versions, stainless steel threading, a 1-1/4"-20 tapped thread, and a jaw pad that won't mar finished surfaces). All are sized by how wide their jaws open — 2", 3", and 6" — and an Extendellini pairs with any Matthellini version for extra jaw reach. Mini Matthellinis shrink the same gripping action into a hardened plastic-alloy body for lightweight fixtures, GoPros, and brick lights, and are built into the Minigrip and Microgrip systems. Mafer clamps, by contrast, are dedicated pipe-and-tube clamps: their jaws open to 2" but can't grip irregular surfaces, and in exchange you get a hex receiver with a push/release pin lock and a full lineup of mounting accessories — pins, a right-angle adapter, a snap-in grip head, and the Hollywood SuperFlex Arm — plus a Double Super Mafer that rigs two pipes into a 90-degree frame in seconds.

What's the difference between the Matthellini, the Black Chrome Matthellini, and the Matthellini² (2)?

All three share the Matthellini handle design Matthews is known for, but the build differs from the original and black chrome versions, to the M2. The standard Matthellinis and black chrome Matthellinis use a steel shaft and rubber grip pad with the original jaw design. The Matthellini² is finished in black-hyperchrome, built wiht a curved jaw that reduces surface binding by approximately 67 compared to previous versions, has a stainless steel pin with thread tapped 1/4"-20, and a thicker red plastic jaw pad.

What do the Matthellini sizes mean?

All versions of the standard size Matthellini clamp are named for how wide their jaws open. A 2" Matthellini opens up to two inches max, a 3" opens up to 3" max, and a 6" opens up to six inches max. The size in the name tells you the largest pipe, tube, or object the jaws can clamp onto.

What's the difference between a center jaw and an end jaw Matthellini?

Center Jaw Matthellini Clamps grip in the middle of the tool, letting you mount your fixture directly against the mounting surface. End Jaw Matthellini Clamps grip at one end of the tool, allowing you to clamp in a low profile space.

Can I make a Matthellini's jaws open wider?

Extendellini is compatible with both the 2" and 3" Center Jaws of each of the three clamp families. It will give you an additional 12 inches or clamping room - extending a 2" jaw to a 14" jaw, and a 3" jaw to a 15
jaw. Extendellini is not compatible with the End Jaw Matthellinis.

What surfaces can a Matthellini Clamp Grip?

Matthellini clamps are built to grip just about any surface you can get the jaws around - pipe, tube, tables, chairs, bannisters, and even just a sheet of paper. That versatility is why they're used well beyond the film industry, and in fact, anywhere a fast, secure clamp is useful.

What is a Mini Matthellini and when should I use one?

The Mini Matthellini is a smaller, lighter version of the standard clamp, built from a hard plastic to keep weight down. It was originally designed for Matthews' Mini Grip Kits that are product companions to the popular RoadRags and RoadRags II lighting modification kits. Mini Matthellini works well for lightweight fixtures and mounts like brick lights, among others. Mini Matthellinis are only available in end jaw versions, terminating in a knurled 3/8" pin.

What's the difference between the two Mini Matthellini versions?

One Mini Matthellini has the knurled 3/8" pin that is tapped 1-1/4"-20, while the other Mini Matthellini is also knurled 3/8" pin that terminates in 3/8" threading.

What is a Mafer Clamp used for?

Mafer clamps are designed specifically to grip round tube and pipe, with jaws that open up to 2". Unlike Matthellini clamps, they aren't intended for irregular surfaces or flat surfaces. They offer a hex receiver mounting point with a push/release mechanism that captures the hex pin, so it stays in the clamp even if the lockoff becomes loose. Mafers are also tapped 3/8" so they can thread directly onto compatible mounts, and their jaws are lined with a rubber grip pad to protect the mounting surface.

What finishes and pin options does the Mafer com in?

Mafer Clamps come in both silver and black, and are available for purchase as a single clamp, or as a clamp with 5/8" Pin.

What accessories are available for the Mafer clamp?

The Mafer clamp accessory lineup includes the standard 5/8" baby pin, a 1/4"-20 snap-in pin, the Hollywood Superflex Arm, a right angle pin, and a grip head pin. This lineup gives you a vast amount grip and rigging options, depending on need.

What is the Double Super Mafer clamp?

The Double Super Mafer clamp gives you two hex-mount pin options on either side of the clamp, letting you mount two accessories at once.

Do Mafer clamps protect the surfaces they mount to?

Yes. Mafer clamps have a rubber grip pad that is slightly textured, which helps to both protect the mounting surface and provide some bite for the mounted tube or pipe to remain in place.
